David Eric Flick II, 44, of Carmel, Indiana sailed beyond the sunset on March 1, 2019. David was born on May 14, 1974 to David Flick and Suzanne (Estes) Lyon in Atwater, California.

Answering a call to service, David entered the United States Navy at 38 years old and continually received the highest honors and recognition for superior performance. He earned the rank of Quartermaster 1st Class Petty Officer after only a few years of service. David was awarded multiple honors and letters of commendation throughout his short but dedicated career, including six Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals for professional achievement and superior performance. In 2016, he was honored to be named both Naval Reserve Command Career Counselor of the Year and Regional Junior Sailor of the Year.

After earning a Bachelor’s Degree in the Arts from Indiana University (Dean’s List) in 2014, David continued his education and received a Master’s Degree in Global Technology and Development from Arizona State University. Through his tireless studies, he earned and achieved membership in Phi Kappa Phi Academics Honor Society and Salute Military Academic Honor Society, Alpha Tier. He was incredibly honored to be chosen as the Convocation Speaker at graduation. David was especially proud to lead The Cyprus Opportunity, a scalable, data-driven program addressing intergenerational education solutions within environments of conflict and disparity.

David’s life was guided by and dedicated to the arts. A prolific musician and artist, creativity was an integral part of his life. His creations - multiple albums, a full-length novel, paintings, sketches and poems - are just some of the cherished treasures he has left behind.

David was committed to a life of service, specifically making an impact in the lives of young people. He proudly served as an Instructional Assistant in the Special Services Department at Carmel High School.

David’s wit, curiosity, and passion will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his father, David (Nicha) Flick of Lake Havasu City, AZ; mother, Suzanne (Alan) Lyon of Sheridan, IN, his former wife, Carrie Hilliker and beloved daughter, Cecilia Tennyson Hilliker-Flick of Chicago, IL. David is also survived by his sister, Jennifer K. (Keith) Goldman of Rancho Mission Viejo, CA and two step-sisters, Kim (Silas) DeVaney, and Lori (Nick) Christy both of Sheridan, IN. David is going to be especially missed by his wonderful nieces, Gemma S. Goldman and Eva B. Kempf, as well as his sweet nephew George N. Kempf. David is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss him very deeply. Preceding him in death are his grandparents Leonard and Mary Estes and James and Corrine Flick.

Come, my friends,
’Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
Push off, and sitting well in order smite
The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, until I die.
— Alfred, Lord Tennyson
